In The Fashionista's Closet: Miss Match

I was working on this outfit post of what I wore to church Sunday and read T Minus T Plus' post on "being matchy"  and wanted to give my input. I am a fan of contrasting colors, I typically like to wear two colors that don't 'go together' Here is what I put out to wear for church on Sunday:

BUT although I loved this color combo, I didn't wear it because frankly, these shoes hurt my feet and I didn't know how far I would have to park from my car into church. And there's nothing worse than not being able to walk cute because your feet hurt. You may think you're playing it off, but no. You just look like your feet hurt.

So instead I wore this:

Can we not discuss the poor quality of my picture taking skills because I have no tripod? Thanks.

Here's a close up of the shoes:

I loved them because they look like shoes for a doll

So as you can see I, not being a particular fan of the 'match' did in fact match my shoes to my dress although I didn't purchase them together and had no intention of wearing them at the same time. I also resisted the urge to carry my yellow bag and opted for black. So see friends, really it's all about your personal choice. No one was harmed in the matching of this outfit.

In The Fashionista's Closet: Hip Hip Hooray!

I got this dress at a thrift store for about 7 bucks, it looks very hippie chick. (Or should I say hippie chic!) It had a small tear on the seam but I stitched it right up and it's all good!
Full disclosure: I set the timer on the camera and was rushing to get in place and I stumbled but still tried to salvage the shot:

This is my second shot after the trip up:

The shenanigans I go through for my readers!

And here are a couple of close up shots of my hair:

*Sorry for the pale face, I had just put my foundation on*

These are twists that I do using Qhemet Biologics Amla and Olive Heavy Cream and Eco-styler gel. I don't part when I twist my hair except in the front to make it look neater. I then gather the twists together while rolling them and use bobby pins to hold. I've been doing this for years and people always think that it's complicated but it's not.

That's all for now. It took me forever to do this post, my computer was running slowly so I finally transferred or deleted the bazillion photos that I had stored. Yay to progress!

Here are a few pics from the event:

In The Fashionista's Closet:

Do you see me striking my fave pose with the legs crossed?

I call this my 'Minnie Mouse' dress, doesn't it make you think of her? I love the colors and  it has pockets, what could be better?! It is from Ross but I got in February or March. It had a dirt stain on it so I got it for10 percent off. The salesperson did tell me that I could return it if the stain didn't come out but thank goodness it did. Had I thought of it I would have carried my big red bag with this but I was in a hurry therefore no handbag in the shot.

Polka dot and yellow dress - Ross
Patent belt - Came with another dress and I switched it out
Black strappy sandal - Nine West
Hair - I twist my hair into individual twists and then I roll the twists and bobby pin as I go down each side. I will post pics of my process another day.

Another Meet and Greet and a Do-It-Yourself Idea!

Me and my partner in crime, Reiko of GFS met up again last night and this time managed to snag a bonafide authoress to hang out with us! (Does anyone else remember Maya from 'Girlfriends' stating that she was an authoress time and time again?) We had a grand time with Chastity from The Curvy Girl's Guide to Style, a recent transplant from Georgia who just recently published a book of the same name. Chastity definitely knows her style game and her book is a must read for all the curvy girls out there. And for a mere $15 she gives style tips, shopping sites, and body type information to make curvy girl shopping easy breezy.

Reiko, Chastity and me

Don't the ladies look great?

In The Fashionista's Closet:

Linen Dress: Banana Republic
Cognac wedges: Steve Madden
White Bag: Prada
Green necklace set: One of the jewelry sets that I am selling for $30, stay tuned for close up photos and descriptions.

The dress that I'm wearing used to be white. I wanted it because I was obsessed with Will & Grace; well actually I was obsessed with Grace's wardrobe and I would got to nbc.com every week and it would show you what designers Grace wore in every episode. (I take this fashion thing very seriously.) So Grace wore this white dress in a cruise episode and it was from Banana Republic and was then regular price. So I waited until the dress was marked down and the salesguy told me when it would be marked down even more and I was able to get it for a fraction of what Grace paid and felt very smug that I had put one over on Grace although I'm pretty sure Grace got hers for free.

I had it for years but it was limited in its wearability, I couldn't wear it to a wedding because it was, well, white so I would wear it to different events and add a belt or flowers at the waist and in my hair but because it was white everyone remembered it. So last year I decided to dye it. I bought two bottles of yellow Rit dye, followed the washing machine instructions and voila, it's perfect!

It was much darker as it came out of the machine but I still like the lighter finished result. What about you, have you been able to give an article of clothing a "new look" with dye?

Common Denominator: We all Love God's Favorite Shoes!

A HUGE shout out to Reiko from God's Favorite Shoes for coming to Dallas and emailing me to let me know she was in town so that we could meet and laugh and thrift together. And for introducing me to Erin from Work With What You've Got and Tina from T Minus, T Plus, the most hilarious girls I've met in forever! Sometimes in the midst of trying times, you get a chance to laugh your butt off! Here's to the start of something beautiful!

Tina, (running to get settled before the camera took the pic), moi, Reiko and Erin

I should NOT have turned to the side, my butt looks huge.

My fave two shots! Aren't the ladies fab?! Notice I crossed my legs in front of each other like the 'stars' do and I don't look so wide. Success!

My 'Sister from another Mister', Reiko.
We have lots and lots in common and it seems as though we've known each other forever!

Let's Get Real!

Okay, I had the pleasure of meeting some fellow bloggers last night and I told them of my struggle of updating and keeping up the blog. I have been wanting to quit for various reasons, most of them because of the self-defeat that I was putting into my own head but I realized that I have a voice and I should let it be heard. Even if I'm the only person reading it, I think it's important to have an outlet. I think the biggest issue is that my blog is too neutral. I have wanted it to appeal to different groups so I have kept it generic and haven't really shown my personality. Well, chickadees, that's over. I will write posts from my viewpoint, I won't be shackled by fear of offending people or thinking that they won't "get me." If it doesn't appeal to you, you don't have to read it, there are plenty of other blogs out there just waiting for you. I am letting my personality Shine!

"Our lives are not determined by what happens to us, but how we react to what happens; not by what life brings us, but by the attitude we bring to life. A positive attitude causes a chain reaction of positive thoughts, events and outcomes. It is a catalyst, a spark that creates extraordinary results." - UNKNOWN

So anywho, that being said, here are some things that I am currently obsessed with:

1. The 50s and 70's. I was born in the 70's. The EARLY 70's. I watch or record Good Times five days a week and I just watched Diana Ross in Mahogany on Sunday and I love that era. It's so ME, maxidresses, wide legged jeans and platform shoes. I wear flowers in my hair whenever I can and would live on love if I could but that doesn't pay any kind of bill. But I am a flower child at heart.

Miss Ross in Mahogany

I used to watch Donna Reed with my mom on Nick at Nite and I loved that this lady was so dressed up when her family came home, wearing pearls and everything. Pearls, people. I love the full skirt, nipped in waist and popped up collar silhouette that was popular at the time and I look for similar styles when I go thrifting. Now I need to break down and buy that crinoline that I've been wanting for forever to really give me the look that I love. Updated of course.

Can't remember where I found this photo of the black dress but I love it; Donna Reed in the kitchen

2. Socks with sandals. Not your dad's version but the cute thin school girl sock with platforms. I'll admit it, I haven't seen it in real life but I like it. But I don't know if I have the nerve to rock it.

Pics from Garance Dore and Sea of Shoes

3. Tracee Ellis Ross. I watched the tv show Girlfriends from the very beginning and from that beginning I identified with neurotic, relationship challenged but always chic, Joan. I loved that show from the pilot to the end, long after others had stopped watching because I had to see what she was wearing. I even looked up the show's stylist, Stacy Beverly and sent her an email letting her know how much I loved the work that she did. But as in life, Tracee Ellis Ross proves that being fashionable wasn't just for the show and leaves me wanting to raid her closet.

All You Need is Love!

....As in, Georgina Goodman's Love shoe! Available in both flats and heels, the shoe, inexplicably called the 'Leon' but has the word 'Love' spelled out along the sides is available in black and nude. I prefer the nude version with the black writing and Gwyneth Paltrow is also a fan.

But Love comes at a major price as the flats are $580 and the heeled version is $920 but both are available at endless.com

Willow Smith: Fashionista in Training

I know that some will tsk, tsk Willow Smith's attire for being "too grown up" but I think that she looks adorable, still kid friendly but daring and funky. Willow, 9 is attending her brother Jaden's premier of "The Karate Kid" with her parents Will and Jada and oldest brother Trey. I think that she looks appropriate for the event but a mini-me version of her mother "back in the day." But what do you think, is this look too adult for the youngest Smith kid?
