The Follicle Chronicles: My Routine and Products

I've had some questions about my hair routine and maintenance so here's my first hair related post. I plan to do more how-to's and before and afters so bear with me. I don't consider myself a hair guru and I don't play one on tv so if you have any product recommendations, hairstyle tips or routine advice, please share!

I conditioner wash my hair once a week with Aussie Moist Conditioner. I sometimes add castor oil or grapeseed oil to my hair while it has conditioner in it to detangle and strengthen.

Pinned up twists 2006-2007

I  wash my hair with shampoo once a month and deep condition once or twice a month depending on how much I wear my hair out and what products I am using. I use Creme of Nature Detangling Shampoo or Pantene Clarifying Shampoo to get rid of buildup. I DEFINITELY deep condition after the clarifying shampoo because it dries the hair out and I need to replenish the moisture.

Twistouts or braidouts are normally done using pure unrefined shea butter + coconut oil or grapeseed oil. I take some shea butter out of the container, add the oil and melt it down in the microwave. I sometimes add a little bit of Eco-Styler gel with Olive Oil for more definition.

She is going to kill me for using this pic, but I had to, Ree!

Wash and Go. I miss my short hair sometimes...

Twists that I pinned in front, my hair was super short in back. Both pics are from 2006.

For wash and gos (I only wear wear wash and gos in a puff now) I will leave a little Aussie Moist conditioner in and add Eco-Styler gel to the edges and tie it down for about 10-15 minutes.

My staple products:

Pure unrefined shea butter (Purchased at Gold Beauty Supply in Mesquite.) I have never ordered shea butter online so I cannot recommend any sites. Make sure you read the product ingredients, you want to make sure that it is only shea butter and that it is not mixed with other things.
Grapeseed oil (Whole Foods) in the cooking section.
Aussie Moist Conditioner (Walmart, Target and Family Dollar)

Coconut Oil (Whole Foods) also in the cooking section.

 Hair sites that I frequent:
Most times I will wear either a twistout or braidout, twistouts are easier and faster to do but braidouts give me more definition and stretch my hair out. When I twist my hair I keep it twisted for at least two or three days, this gives it a chance to "set." I think that this helps with definition and my hair takes a while to dry but I choose not to blow dry my hair. After a twistout or braidout I re-twist my hair at night into large twists or plaits and this stretches my hair and usually on the second or third day my hair is exactly the way that I like it.
The style shown in these pics is of a braidout done on wet hair using shea butter and eco-styler gel.

Any questions? Ask away!

In The Fashionista's Closet: Deep Ellum Style

I attended the Deep Ellum Arts Festival on Sunday and had a great time and even though it was windy I was sweating like crazy.

Someone left a comment that I am always going somewhere and I literally laughed out loud because it has been only recently that I've been venturing out to do things, I've been a hermit for about a year. I've decided that I need to git up get out and get something, don't let the days of my life pass by. (Lyrics by Outkast in case you didn't know!)

The Longhornisaurus

My fave sunglasses from Bluebird Vintage in Austin

I loved her hair, it was even more fab in person. She uses Kinky Curly Knot Today as a Leave In and Jane Carter Solution for definition but I forgot the Jane Carter product name.

I have had this dress for about 3 years and this is my first time wearing it. I thought it was kinda shapeless so I added a belt. I ordered it from Ebay and apparently it is a knockoff of a Diane von Furstenberg dress but I didn't know that at the time, I just loved the dress. I ran across Life in Travel's blog and saw that she was wearing the same dress but in a different color but she has the DVF version. See hers HERE.

Dress: Ebay (yeah, it has pockets!)

In The Fashionista's Closet: From Chic to Bushed

Yes yes, I know, I've been wearing my chains and this bag like they're going out of style, I just love them both so! I'll switch it up soon, I pinky swear.

People were asking me about my necklace at the Dallas Chic Festival event and I know I've said it before but it's actually three items. One vintage pendant necklace (I doubled it), a jeans belt (see similar here) and a chain belt (see similar here) that I've doubled. I'm a firm believer that you don't have use things for their intended purposes, wear a necklace as a bracelet, a dress as a top or turn your dress backwards. Be Nike, just do it!

Tank: Target
Isaac Mizrahi for Target Skirt: Thrifted
Bag: Vintage

I.heart.these.shoes. They are one of my highest heels but the platform makes them comfy and I wore them all day with no issues. Here's a closer look here:

OMG this limontini at Neo in Victory Park was super delicious! It was a like a slurpee (but with alcohol!)

Required reading? My friend is reading this book, she whipped it out at lunch and I got sidetracked by my pizza and tasty adult beverage that I didn't get an opportunity to really examine it. Sounds wicked, doesn't it?

Busy Saturdays makes for one tired girl but I had a fun fun day!

The Fab and the Stylish at Dallas Chic Festival

I attended the Dallas Chic Festival on Saturday and it was such a pleasure to meet some beautiful and stylish ladies! Chastity of The Curvy Girl's Guide to Style spoke at the event and there was also a fashion show and drawings for gift baskets and one of my girlfriends won one!

Me with the woman of the hour Chastity! We have a mutual admiration for full skirts.
(My outfit post coming later...)

Isn't she the cutest?!? Love these earrings? She's the designer! Check out earring designs from Ayo Design Studio HERE.

I loved every.single.part of this display and Yvonne's designs!

She was such a cool chick, ultra cool artsy vibe and super nice!

Check out her Etsy shop HERE

 Isn't she talented?!?

I corralled a photo with this attendee because I loved her style. That hat! Phenomenal! I was even peeping out her hair underneath the hat. Cute! Natural short bronze hue underneath....Definitely not easing my itch to cut my hair.

Girls Just Want to Have Fun (and Pedicures)

I met Elissa from Dress With Courage at the Aveda Salon for our complimentary pedicures from the Park Lane Blogger Event and even though we had to wait over an hour(!) for them to even begin on my pedicure we had a fun time of girl talk.

Main reasons why Elissa is one cool chick:

She's sassy (you can totally tell that by her red spiky hair, tattoos and she wears sequins almost daily.)

She's definitely a cool mom (see #1.)

She loves thrift stores. (Nuff said.)

She's from Brooklyn (also home of Jay-Z.)

She likes Jay-Z (Need I say more?)

We talked online dating (she thinks I should), favorite thrift/vintage stores, and blogs we love. The only thing missing? Tasty adult beverages!

The unmentionables (it's been waaaaaayyyy too long)

Outfit details: fedora (Target men's dept.), earrings (Aldo Accessories), men's Bill Blass white shirt (rummage sale), assorted bangles (assorted places) cargo pants (JC Penney gifted from Reiko), red peep toes and bag *seen below* (Guess and Kooba)

We weren't done until after 10 pm(!) so if you're going to Aveda, you may want to call ahead and see if there is a wait or book earlier in the day and hopefully you'll be lucky enough to work with Tosha, she was the best!

In The Fashionista's Closet: Squinty McLaughsALot

Sometimes the ridiculousness of  this blogging thing becomes transparent and I have to laugh about it. Photos. Of me. And my outfits. People read what I write, look at my pics and comment. Repeat.

So whenever I begin to take myself too seriously, things like today happen.

I recruited coerced a new photographer today and chaos is the best word to describe the shenanigans that took place. We took photos close to the school and cars kept slowing down and people were peering out of their windows. And honking. And teachers were waving. And yelling out of their cars, "What are you DOING?"

And in the meantime I'm giving instructions (ok, yelling) at the "photographer"
"Take multiple pictures. Take it now! Take one while I'm walking. Ok, another. It doesn't have to be centered! Stop waiting!" She obviously didn't follow any of my instructions and only took pics when I was squinting, laughing hysterically or if there were telephone poles or people in the photos.

But I don't blame her, she was trying to do me a favor. I laughed at myself later for being so demanding. Why didn't I use my tripod and just take my own photos after the whole debacle, you ask? Because it's Friday. And I have stuff to do. So these will have to do.
